Schwinn New World three-speed on Portland CL

I’m not usually moved to re-post things I’ve seen on the local Craigslist, but this one is interesting. It’s a Schwinn New World three-speed, ladies frame. I’m guessing it might be from the 40’s, due to the Sturmey-Archer “quadrant” shifter, and also note the “AS and CO” cottered crank/chainring.
If it’s that old, $275 is not too bad a price (and they dropped it from $375 from this morn.)

  1. This model started production in 38 (as did the Paramount) and is likely (not sure) a Schwinn handmade bike (I’ve got notes on this model but they aren’t very complete by any means). Likely stopped early in 42 with the war effort though I got nothing to back this up either.
    Schwinn like most American manufactures of all types of products stopped their regular production of “stuff” to support the war effort. Like wise pre-war bikes are kind of rare (though I hate that term because the term doesn’t necessarily mean valuable) because many if not most the bikes made before Pearl Harbor were donated for recycling for the manufacture of bombs and tanks and such.
    I’m pretty sure this line was Schwinns attempt to compete with Raleigh and Phillips for the American Tourist (which Raleigh who owned Sturmey Archer was more than happy to sell them the components to make them) bike market. Pre war, Schwinn wasn’t the big deal that most people now a days think they were. They were in there but so were Rollfast, Columbia, Elgin, Monarch (latter Murray) just to name a few. Schwinn as a brand didn’t really take off until the 50′s with the kids bikes and the cruisers and then solidified their name with the Varsity, which if you like them or not were largely responsible for the American bike boom of the late 60′s early 70′s.
    Honestly if I had the extra funds and no projects sitting around, I’d be all over this one unless something seemed fishy when looking at it in person. Looks to be in really great shape for it’s age.
