Before you contact us, please note a few things:

  • This is not a bicycle appraisal website. We are not bicycle pricing experts, so please do not ask how much your bike is worth. If you do, we will snarkily respond, “Three dollars,” then ask to buy your bike for three dollars.
  • I am not a bicycle mechanic, nor do I own/work in a bicycle shop. I am not the best person to ask about mechanical stuff. If you do, I will most likely pass along the info to people who are better with that stuff. Before you contact me regarding mechanical issues, I would advise checking Sheldon Brown first. If that’s not answered, I would ask the question on the Gentleman Cyclist Google group and/or the “For the love of English 3-speeds” thread on Bikeforums. You’ll find the web addresses for all that on our Links page.

  1. I like this idea. (check wording of second line of Why 3 speeds page)
I have a Sturmey Archer hub, unfortunately only on my urban bike.
But I am a slow rider.

  2. Hi everybody, I have a simple but not easy for me, I just started in the Raleigh Bicycle world, the question is: All the Raleigh Sports bike comes with 3 speeds system or Can you get a simple gear on it? I’m talking at 50’s Raleigh Sport, I just bought one but looks all original but only single speed.
    Thanks for the help. Regards.

    1. Hi, Hugo. I’m not exactly sure what you are asking. Do you want to convert a single-speed bike to a three-speed? For that you’ll need a wheel with a three-speed hub, plus cable and shifting mechanism. Converting a three-speed to a single speed can be as easy as removing the cable and shifter, which will lock it into high (3rd) gear. Not the best solution, but it works. Otherwise, you’ll need to find a single-speed wheel.

  3. Sorry about the confuse question, OK the question is: Raleigh did sell bicycle Sport model with a single speed? or all the Sport model came with 3 speed by default.
    Regards.
    Hugo

    1. Hugo, Raleigh DID have Sports models with just a single speed. But these tended to be from before World War II. After WWII it was pretty much standard for Sports to be a three-speed. There may have been some lesser models that had a single speed, but pretty much from the 1950s on Sturmey-Archer three-speed hubs were standard.

      1. Thanks!
I’m hunting all the hardware to be 3 X speeds!
I will post pictures later on.

  4. Greetings from Ajax near Toronto. Here is a shot of one of my Twenties “On the farm” I also have another Twenty and two Raleigh Sports. Pictures if anyone’s interested

  5. I live here in pdx and am happy to have found this site! I have a raleigh tourist/dl-1 that can no longer stay rideable.
When I install a new cotter pin it fits in too far and within a few days the threads become stripped. I tried to make-shift a shim to jam inside as well as a jb weld(wishfull thinking!) and i’m at a loss. Any leads to someone here in town that has bb stuff specific to a dl-1? I should note that these models are different sizing to sports, supurbes, etc. Thanks!

    1. Check the links page for more info, especially the Sheldon Brown links. Really, there usually is no more maintenance than oiling it every once in awhile, if it has an oil port.
